At work we use commercial Firewall appliances, where the vendors charge a fortune for the updates and support, its poor value for money, so I’m going to be looking into the Open Source alternatives, here’s the ones I’ve identified so far, hopefully I’ll get chance to review them and post my findings -

VMWare Server sucks!

At the office we use VMWare Server on a couple of different systems to run “appliance” based applications, the problem is every few months the Web interface suddenly screws up and all we get is 503 errors when attempting to login. I’ve searched high and low for the cause and solution to fix it, as far I can tell its occurs because the server randomly deletes or corrupts some important Tomcat related content. Then the only solution I’ve found to fixing this is completely uninstall VMWare Server, remove all the licenses, reboot the system and then re-install VMWare server.

The last time this occurred, after re-installation, VMWare refused to accept my license key, even when I tried re-entering it I got errors stating its invalid, I fixed this by going into the registry and overwriting the Registry as follows -

To change the serial number:
Go to Run
Type in regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE – Software – VMware, Inc.
Expand VMware, Inc.
Expand the subfolder named VMware Server
Go to License
Right click on Serial on the right window pane
Select modify and paste the new serial number/license key
Hit OK

Projx Transfer

Some users are reporting problems with Projx Transfer and the new version of Eclipse, this is something I need to investigate, but won’t have time to do it until next week, please continue using Eclipse 3.4 – 3.5 until then..

Server Outage

Sorry the website had been down for a little while, there was an IP routing problem which I did not spot. I’m currently working on a High Availability LAMP setup, which I’ll post details and results for a little later, there should be some interesting trinkets in there for people looking for File replication, Database replication etc on a Linux based servers.

MySQL HA

We’re currently in the process of splitting our websites out onto pairs of servers for High Availability, unfortunately MySQL is pretty poor when it comes to this, its replication facilities leave a lot to be desired and often fall out of sync. But there is a collection of scripts called Maatkit which can help fix this. Here’s a good tutorial http://blogama.org/node/39

Proj-x Transfer fix

I’ve finally had some free time to spend on fixing Transfer, it seems the problems were not caused by bugs, instead other plug-ins such as PDT (from v2 onwards) changed the way they’re implemented and started using the Eclipse DLTK (Dynamic Language Tool Kit) which meant Transfer no longer knew how to process requests from the new PHP Explorer (This was not a problem for me, as I use an older version of PDT).

Anyway, I will release a test version of Tranfer 1.2 shortly, note its not final, I intend to add more error checking and some default settings.

Please note the new version of Transfer required the DLTK be installed, I’ll add instructions for this when I release the test.

Proj-x Transfer v1.1.1 is now available

I’ve finally got some free time to update Proj-x Transfer, so these are the changes in version 1.1.0

Keyboard shortcuts now work in the Editor, what ever your working on will be Queued/Uploaded/Downloaded.
Added option to set PASV or ACTIVE transfer in the Project Properties.
Fixed remote permissions bug which caused the plugin to constantly generate “Access Denied” error’s and eventually crash.

The latest version can be downloaded from the Transfer homepage

as with all things Eclipse, getting the Editor Shortcuts was a little tricky, I’ll save that for a later post.

UPDATE: After testing the update at work I found the Editor shortcuts didn’t work with PDT, so I’ve made a fix for this and released it as v1.1.1.

I’ve just learnt that that Hollywood will be turning the Isaac Asimov Foundation Trilogy into film.

I’ve been a fan of Isaac Asimov book’s for as long as I can remember, unfortunately the Hollywood touch doesn’t usually do them justice.
